The Commercial Court 1 division of the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Samuel Kwame Asiedu, has granted an application filed by the Attorney General seeking to discontinue the liquidation process of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The government has reached a mutual understanding with the world governing football body, the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) on how to reform football administration in the country.

The court on Tuesday, 28 August 2018, revoked an earlier powers it gave the AG on 4 June to begin the process to liquidate the GFA after it emerged the association was deep rooted in corruption following the investigative work done by Anas Aremeyaw Anas dubbed “Number 12”.

Addressing the media after court proceedings on Tuesday, the Deputy Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah-Dame, said the Government of Ghana engaged FIFA and took key decisions to ensure interim measures are taken to regulate football in Ghana.

The move by the government is in fulfilment of an agreement that it signed with FIFA on 16 August 2018.

Per the agreement signed at the FIFA Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, the government and the football governing body decided to establish a normalisation committee that would replace the GFA’s Executive Committee.

The world football governing viewed government’s action to liquidate the GFA as undue interference in the administration of Ghana football and in contravention of FIFA statutes.

Ghana, however, avoided a possible ban after a government delegation met with FIFA at its headquarters to find a common ground of reforming the administration of football in the country.
