Boy, 15, commits suicide because his family couldn’t send him to SHS

Even in an age of free SHS, poverty wreaks havoc

A 15-year-old Junior High School graduate has committed suicide by hanging in his room at Agona Asafo in the Agona East District of the Central region for not getting his school of choice.

Isaac Arhin, affectionately called Yaw completed Junior High School in Tema and obtained aggregate 20 but the Computerized School Selection and Placement System placed him at Kwahu Tafo in the Eastern region. According to a family spokesperson of the deceased, he selected a school in the Central region but instead he was placed far away in Eastern region”.

His family complained about having no money to purchase a few items to enable him to attend school and according to the sister of the deceased who narrated the sad incident to Journalists at Agona Asafo, the boy ended his life.

He was staying with his uncle in Tema where he completed the 2019 B.E.CE. Family sources say Isaac came home to his father at Agona Asafo three days ago without the consent of his uncle and upon arrival, his father asked him to learn fashion designing but he declined to say he wanted to go to secondary school.

His family members at Asafo had indicated that they did not have enough resources to send him to secondary school. Although Senior High School is free, they needed to buy some items before they could send him.

He had been complaining that his parents were not willing to send him to secondary school prior to his death. His sister said at about 5 AM, the deceased told her that he was very hungry. She asked him to wait since food vendors were not available that early. She later left the house to collect money from someone who was indebted to her and upon her return, she found her door locked and several knocks on it went unanswered until a passerby suggested they should break the door. They did so only to find the lifeless body of the boy hanging.

A report has since been made to the Agona Swedru District Police Command, led by Chief Inspector Opoku- Mensah who went to the scene to retrieve the body and has been deposited at Swedru Municipal Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
