Kofi Kinaata is trending for all the right reasons. At least there is no doubt his latest track “Things Fall Apart” is a song which has met the right cultural debate and is setting a tone that’s getting even some religious folk defensive.
But Things Fall Apart doesn’t address an issue as catastrophic as the one his song against illegal fishing does.
In Illegal Fishing, Kinaata deals with issues ranging from environmental damage to global warming to all kinds of detrimental practices our fisherfolk have adopted in the name of profit.
Our culture had safeguards built in to take care of human excesses by imposing bans on specific days, times and seasons where fishermen were not permitted to fish in the seas and even our rivers.
These practices have been abandoned in the name of capitalism, democracy and religion (institutions that were supposed to know better).
Kinaata’s Closed Season/Illegal Fishing addresses all these and more but as usual that song has gone unnoticed. People are not ready to face the truth of human actions and how we are all damaging our world in pursuit of Mars.
