A suspended Vice Chairman of the ruling NPP in the Central Region, Ekow Ewusi, has been arrested by Police investigators following a complaint by Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng.
Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng reported the embattled vice-chair to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for his role in the missing excavators and other mining equipment.
The ruling government has, in recent weeks, been under immense pressure to investigate and punish those who are responsible for the missing excavators and equipment seized from illegal miners by the Operation Vanguard team, made up of the police, military, and other security services.
Last week, Professor Frimpong-Boateng disclosed on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show that some of the seized excavators had gone missing, sparking strong reactions from the opposition NDC and sections of Ghanaian civil society and the general public.
In the letter to the police CID, Professor Frimpong-Boateng stated:
“Mr. Ekow Ewusi was contracted to cart excavators and other vehicles and pieces of equipment seized by Operation Vanguard to designated areas for safekeeping.
“We have received information that he sent an unknown number of equipment to unauthorized locations, including one in Tema. This was confirmed by the caretaker of the depot in Tema.
“Information reaching me indicates that he has sold an unknown number of pieces of equipment, including excavators.
“I wish to appeal to the Police Authorities to investigate the matter.”
