The cost of creating the self-service SIM registration app would be covered by a five cedi fee, according to the Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. The minister claimed that although the software had been in development for some time, it had come to a standstill due to the cost of its use.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful stated that the fee would ensure that the app would pay for itself during a recent interview on Asaase Radio.
“It’s been in development, but whether we were going to offer it (the app) or not judging by the cost of usage and that is why we had to introduce it at a fee so that it can pay for itself,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful stated.
“Nobody is looking to benefit in any way. When I hear these things, I shudder to think of how low we have fallen. Does everything in our country have to be about money? The minister questioned.
“People can’t deliver a service because it is needed and not hope to profit from it, where is our sense of duty to our country and our sense of nationality,” she said.
The Minister announced last Sunday that the app will be prepared for a commercial launch on Tuesday, as part of an attempt to address various issues related to the ongoing SIM re-registration drive.
The Minister announced that a GH5 fee would be applied to each registration made through the app, which will be made available for download on both Android and IOS this week.
The Minister also mentioned that as part of the Self-Service SIM Registration App’s rollout, there will be publicity and public education on its use.
