Since the tragic earthquake took over 2000 lives on Monday alone, President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has conveyed his sincere sympathies to the government and people of Turkey and Syria.
He also hoped that Christian Atsu, the Black Stars player and a former star of Chelsea and Newcastle United, would be discovered alive and well.
On Monday, February 6, morning at around 13:30 local time, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake happened in Gaziantep, affecting the two nations (10:30 GMT).
Hours after the initial earthquake, a large aftershock with a magnitude of 7.5 struck Turkey’s south, primarily affecting southern Turkey and northern Syria.
In total, 2,300 fatalities and 6,000 injuries have been reported in the two nations, with the majority occurring in Turkey.
Rescue efforts are presently being conducted to locate further victims of the tragic accident.
Numerous people have still not been located, including Ghana’s best athlete and former Chelsea and Newcastle United star Christian Atsu, who is said to be stuck beneath the rubble.
In a Facebook message in response to the news, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed Ghana’s deepest condolences to the two countries and prayed for the souls of the deceased to find eternal peace.
He stated that he and Ghana are praying for the survivors as well as for one of their own, Christian Atsu, to be discovered alive and well.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Governments and peoples of Turkey and Syria on the devastation and the tragic loss of lives occasioned by Monday’s earthquake. May their souls rest in perfect peace,” part of President Akufo-Addo’s post reads.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the survivors, and we pray that our fellow Ghanaian, Christian Atsu, is found safe and sound,” President Akufo-Addo said.
