Ahead of the Assin North by-election, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), met with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership on Monday, June 26 according to a Joy News report.
The meeting’s main goal was to make sure that there would be peace prior to, during, and following the June 27 election.
At the IGP’s request, the engagement was held in the Assin State College SHS.
Both political parties are committed to maintaining electoral integrity and refraining from any criminal activity.
They also discussed other crucial issues, gave their expectations, and offered their opinions.
The IGP emphasized the importance of neutrality, impartiality, and transparency in the electoral process.
Assin North now needs a by-election after the Electoral Commission received a letter from Parliament declaring the seat vacant.
This came after the Supreme Court ruled that the Electoral Commission had broken the law by permitting Mr. Quayson to run in the 2020 parliamentary election without providing proof that he had renounced his citizenship in Canada.
In its decision, the supreme court mandated that James Gyakye Quayson’s name be removed from the records of the House.
It further stated that his election was invalid, void, and without consequence.
It was also ruled that his oath of office was unlawful.
Following this, the NDC is supporting James Gyakye Quayson, the former Member of Parliament for the constituency, and the NPP has also put forth Charles Opoku.
