Ghanaian TV presenter and journalist Paa Kwesi Asare has clinched the coveted 2023 BBC News Komla Dumor Award. At 36 years old, Asare marks not only the eighth laureate of this prestigious accolade but also the first recipient hailing from Ghana, much like the acclaimed figure after whom the award is named.

Currently serving as the head of business news at TV3, Asare’s seven-year journey as one of the channel’s primary news anchors has undoubtedly paved the way for his recognition on the global stage. The BBC News Komla Dumor Award was established as a tribute to Komla Dumor, a distinguished presenter for BBC World News, whose untimely passing at the age of 41 in 2014 left an indelible mark on journalism.

Komla Dumor’s legacy was marked by his tireless efforts to amplify a multifaceted African narrative that was often overshadowed by stereotypes and misperceptions. His work aimed to spotlight Africa’s confident, innovative, and entrepreneurial spirit, ushering in a new era of storytelling that resonated with global audiences. It is within this inspiring backdrop that Paa Kwesi Asare steps into the limelight, exemplifying the ideals championed by Dumor.

Asare’s achievement holds immense significance for Ghana, a nation that boasts a vibrant and diverse media landscape. His recognition underscores the growing influence and impact of Ghanaian journalists on the international arena, and it pays homage to the dynamic storytelling tradition that Komla Dumor initiated during his tenure at the BBC.

Upon receiving the award, Asare expressed his gratitude and highlighted the importance of honoring Dumor’s legacy.

“This is arguably the most prestigious award for any African journalist. Komla’s talent is one that I greatly admired and to be found worthy of walking in his shoes is not only a joy but also a great privilege.” Asare remarked.

The award not only serves as recognition for Asare’s exceptional contributions but also as an emblem of hope for aspiring journalists across Africa. It encourages them to transcend boundaries, challenge conventions, and create narratives that are both authentic and illuminating. Asare’s journey from being a news anchor at TV3 to a recipient of the BBC News Komla Dumor Award stands as an inspiring example of the potential that lies within the continent’s media landscape.

Paa Kwesi Asare has been named as 2023's Komla Dumor winner.

The journalist, a business news anchor with Ghanaian station, TV3, said he's "totally lost for words" hearing the news.
