In a candid assessment, Manqoba Mngqithi, the coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, has questioned the prevailing notion that playing in Europe automatically signifies superior skills. Mngqithi emphasizes that Ghanaian defenders, despite their European exposure, face challenges in defensive capabilities.
Mngqithi comments, “That’s why we need to understand that playing in Europe doesn’t mean you’re better than the others. Ghana has players in top European leagues, but they struggle in situations like this.” He points out instances where Ghanaian players exhibit a lack of urgency and defensive commitment on the field.
The coach stresses the need for a shift in mindset, stating, “You see a Ghana player walking instead of running and coming to defend. You can’t look at Ofori only. Some players also think they are at a better level because they are playing in Europe, so they won’t work hard. Then why don’t you stay at home and let those who are hungry to play.”
