Presidential hopeful Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, is currently under the scrutiny of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) after it was revealed that he failed to file personal income tax returns from 2013 to 2016. The GRA has reportedly fined Bediako GH¢50,000 for this lapse in tax compliance.
Furthermore, it has been disclosed that Bediako was supposed to pay GH¢2,088,228 for the tax year 2021 and GH¢5,096,536 for 2022. This revelation comes as a significant blow to the presidential aspirant, as concerns are raised about a potential presidential candidate being involved in a tax evasion scandal.
Cheddar gained attention with the launch of The New Force party, marked by an extensive billboard campaign featuring a masked figure. The official unveiling ceremony at Independence Square in Accra faced disruption by National Security personnel on Sunday, January 7, 2024. The party also faced controversy when its spokesperson, Shalimar Abbuissi, was arrested and subsequently deported. The charges against her were related to obtaining a student permit under false declaration.
Addressing the allegations on Citi TV, Bediako clarified that he has been involved in the scrap business and has ventures in the telecommunications industry. During an interview on TV3’s New Day on Thursday, January 11, the convenor of The New Force movement added that his inspiration stems from poverty, the nation’s leaders, and historical figures from the 60s, including Kwame Nkrumah and Patrice Lumumba.
