Abraham Boakye, a prominent figure within the Ghana Supporters Union, has formally shifted his allegiance from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Boakye’s decision is rooted in what he perceives as neglect from the NPP, despite his contributions to the party’s success in the 2016 elections.
Expressing his discontent with the treatment received from the Akufo-Addo government, Boakye highlighted his pivotal role in the party’s victory in 2016. During a gathering with fellow supporters on Sunday, January 14, he officially declared his commitment to working tirelessly for the NDC’s success in the upcoming election.
Boakye, a staunch supporter, affirmed that his followers would join him in voting and campaigning for the NDC to secure victory. In a poignant statement, he said, “Right now, Nana Akufo-Addo is the President of the country. So I am on my knees asking if I’ve offended the government and its officials; if I have done something wrong for which reason I am being treated this way.”
Narrating his significant contributions, Boakye shared, “I have built the Ghana Supporters Union since 1995 in the Ecuador game between Ghana vs Brazil when I was the only Ghana supporter against five thousand Brazilian supporters. But still, Ghana won the game.”
The catalyst for Boakye’s allegiance shift, as revealed during his address, was the government’s decision to exclude him and his dedicated team from transporting supporters to the recent TotalEnergy AFCON 2023. Boakye attributed this exclusion to his support for Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng in the NPP’s just-ended presidential primaries.
Despite the challenges faced, Boakye concluded by stating that he and his team would continue to stand and pray for the victory of the national team in their upcoming games.
