Chinedu Ikedieze, a Nigerian actor best known for playing Aki in the popular comedy “Aki and Pawpaw” from 2021, recently revealed the fascinating history of his friendship with Osita Iheme, better known as Pawpaw.
In an interview with Turkey-Istanbul-based social media vlogger “Gist with Lucy” on December 16, 2023, Ikedieze recounted their journey into Nollywood and the fortuitous meeting that led to their iconic collaboration.
“I have been in the industry since 1998, so he joined in 2001,” Ikedieze began. “I think it was after coming from a movie set, a movie I was shooting titled ‘Atinga,’ where I was on set with Jide Kosovo, the late Sam Loco, and Nkem Owoh. I was coming from school and went to one of the camp resorts we usually use for both location and lodging.”
Ikedieze continued, “So, I got there, and I saw Osita. Before then, I had started hearing about him; people would tell me, ‘Oh, I saw one guy that looks exactly like you.’ So that day, I saw him, and immediately I remembered because I was still a student. He got there, and I approached him because I knew he was a bit shy. If I had waited for him to come, of course, he might not have come. So, I went to him, and seeing somebody who looked like me, I was so excited. So, we exchanged pleasantries, talked, and I was happy.”
The serendipitous encounter paved the way for their enduring friendship and professional partnership. “After the meeting, in less than a month or thereabout, we were called for the role of Aki na Pawpaw. This was the first film we did together and was a blockbuster,” Ikedieze recalled, highlighting the genesis of the beloved Aki and Pawpaw duo that has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.
The Aki and Pawpaw movies, directed by Biodun Stephen and co-produced by Play Network and Film One Entertainment, have left an indelible mark on the Nigerian film industry, with their unique blend of humor and camaraderie resonating with viewers across generations. Written by Steph Boyo and Oziuma Ogbaji, the films continue to be celebrated for their cultural impact and timeless entertainment value.
