Defending champion Ahly will be joined by five strong contenders in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League. With two quarter-final places still up for grabs, the competition is heating up after an intense Match Day 5. Ahly secured their spot with a 1-0 victory over Ghana’s Medeama.
The other teams advancing to the quarterfinals are Ivorian side Asec Mimosas, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Angola’s Petro de Luanda, former African champions TP Mazembe, and Tanzania’s Young Africans. These teams are set to make the knockout phase thrilling, with a game in hand.
Of the six teams that have secured their spots, only two have not won the continental title before. Al Ahly (11 titles), Asec Mimosas (1), Mamelodi Sundowns (1), and TP Mazembe (5) have all lifted Africa’s most coveted club football trophy.
The last two quarter-final spots will be decided on Match Day 6, scheduled for March 1–2. Mamelodi Sundowns and TP Mazembe have already advanced from Group A, while Group D was decided by Ahly and Young Africans’ wins. The remaining spots will be contested in Group B and C.
In Group B, Morocco’s Wydad AC, after a slow start, revived their title ambitions with a 1-0 win over Jwaneng Galaxy. They are tied on six points with Simba AC, who face Jwaneng Galaxy in the final round, while Wydad takes on Asec Mimosas.
In Group C, Petro de Luanda’s qualification leaves the second spot to be contested by Esperance Sportive de Tunis and Al-Hilal. The two sides face each other in a crucial match in Tunis.
