The CAF African Schools Football Championship (ASFC) qualifying has started at the Stade Cheikha Ould Boïdiya in Nouakchott, Mauritania, as per a release from the Confederation of African Football. The WAFU A CAF Zonal Union is hosting the competition, which aims to promote school football and engage youngsters across Africa.
This unique effort, now in its second season, builds on the successful 2022–23 edition, which touched approximately 800,000 school-aged boys and girls across the continent. The current WAFU A qualifications have five nations vying for a position in the finals, where winners in both the boys and girls divisions will be determined on Monday, March 3.
CAF’s dedication to developing future African leaders is obvious in the several seminars held prior to the competition. These workshops, which included a CAF-accredited D License coaching course, a Young Medical Officers Workshop, a Young Reporters Workshop, a Young Referees Workshop, and a CAF Safeguarding Workshop, sought to provide learners and educators with skills for personal and professional development both on and off the field.
The tournament’s opening matches exhibited the talent and passion of young footballers, with notable results including Senegal’s 19-0 victory over Cape Verde in the boys division and Guinea’s 4-0 win over Mauritania. In the girls division, Senegal defeated Cape Verde 4-1, while Guinea secured a 1-0 victory over Gambia.
The competition continues over the next three days, providing a platform for aspiring footballers to shine and fostering the growth of football at the grassroots level in Africa.
