In a tragic turn of events, a 74-year-old British man, John Scott Hughes, died after an intimate encounter with his 20-year-old Ghanaian girlfriend, Pearl Agbomadzi, in Accra’s East Legon district. The young woman now faces murder charges in a case that has stirred public conversation on age-gap relationships and health risks.
The incident took place on August 2, 2024, when Hughes arranged to meet Agbomadzi at a popular entertainment venue, Philipo’s Movie House. After watching a pornographic film in a private room, the two reportedly engaged in a consensual intimate encounter. According to the prosecution, Hughes became unconscious during the act and collapsed.
Agbomadzi, an interior decorator, rushed to notify the reception staff, who promptly called for medical help. Hughes was transported to Legon Hospital but was pronounced dead.
During her court appearance on October 24, Agbomadzi’s attorney, John Baptist Ayedze, requested bail on her behalf, noting that she has been in police custody since the incident. The prosecution, led by Assistant State Attorney Frederick Adu Gyamfi, did not oppose the request.
High Court Judge Lydia Osei Marfo granted bail to the accused on a bond of GHC100,000 with one surety. In her closing remarks, Judge Marfo warned older men to be cautious in their intimate pursuits, emphasizing that relationships with much younger partners could pose serious health risks.
