The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have firmly denied circulating media reports alleging that military personnel were deployed to interfere with parliamentary proceedings at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). In a press release dated October 22, 2024, GAF emphasized that these reports are misleading and tarnish the reputation of the military.
The deployment, according to the GAF, was requested by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, to provide routine security assistance for canine and bomb sweeps of the Chamber. This procedure is standard practice on the first sitting day of Parliament, typically Tuesdays, when sessions are held outside the traditional Parliament House.
GAF clarified that their personnel were not present to interfere with proceedings but to ensure the safety and security of the facility by checking for any explosive devices or harmful substances. The military expressed concern over the spread of false information and urged media outlets to report accurately on matters of public interest.
“Our role was exclusively to conduct security sweeps, and we remain committed to the welfare and safety of all citizens,” said Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for GAF, in the press statement.
The Ghana Armed Forces reiterated their commitment to public safety and called on the media to avoid disseminating false information that could mislead the public.
