In a move towards eco-friendly public transportation, Metro Mass Transit Limited has taken delivery of 100 electric buses. This development follows Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s pledge made two months ago to introduce electric buses into Ghana’s public transit network by the end of the year. The new fleet is expected to streamline commuting with the recent ‘Tap & Go’ system and digital ticketing initiative.
Announced by Vice President Bawumia at a campaign event in Accra, the electric buses represent a major push toward modernizing public transport with sustainability in mind. Each bus is equipped with a preloaded digital card payment system that allows passengers to tap and pay, similar to the UK’s Oyster Card system. Additionally, the Tap & Go mobile app provides a virtual card option for passengers wishing to pay via smartphone, ensuring flexibility and ease for all users.
The Tap & Go system aims to enhance operational efficiency, curb revenue losses, and eradicate corruption by creating a fully transparent, digitalized fare collection method. Passengers can register for the digital card using their GhanaCard and phone number, ensuring traceability and safety. Furthermore, the buses are fitted with security cameras, which will be monitored from a central control room to improve onboard security.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport Kwaku Ofori Asiama called the initiative a “game-changer” for Ghana’s public transport sector, offering affordable and reliable transit options to commuters across the country. With this step, Ghana joins the ranks of nations prioritizing green technology and digital solutions in public transport, fostering sustainable urban mobility for the future.
