NPP Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that, beginning December 1, kidney dialysis treatments will be provided at no cost to all National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) beneficiaries in Ghana. This significant policy expansion follows a successful pilot program that offered free dialysis services to vulnerable age groups, including patients aged 60 and older and those under 18. The positive results of the pilot have led the government to extend free dialysis access to all patients, regardless of age, under the NHIS.
Dr. Bawumia noted that the move aims to relieve the financial burden faced by individuals with kidney disease, many of whom struggle to afford regular dialysis treatments. He emphasized that the new policy aligns with his commitment to making quality healthcare more accessible for all Ghanaians. Kidney dialysis, a critical treatment for patients with kidney failure, has long been a financial hurdle for patients without support, making this initiative a potentially life-changing benefit.
The announcement has garnered widespread praise from healthcare advocates and the general public, who view it as a bold step toward universal healthcare access in Ghana. Many have expressed hope that the initiative will improve the lives of patients dealing with chronic kidney issues, enabling them to receive necessary treatment without financial barriers.
