The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the Speaker of Parliament’s unilateral decision to suspend three of its Minority Members of Parliament, labeling the move as dangerous and undemocratic. In a statement released on February 3, 2025, the party described the Speaker’s actions as an attempt to weaken parliamentary oversight and stifle the opposition’s role in holding the government accountable.
The party reaffirmed its unwavering support for the affected MPs and the entire Minority Caucus, urging all its members to stand firm in defense of parliamentary democracy. The NPP further emphasized that the suspension is in clear violation of the Constitution and the principles of natural justice, vowing not to recognize the Speaker’s decision.
General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who signed the statement, assured the Minority Caucus of the party’s full backing ahead of their scheduled press conference on February 3, 2025. He reiterated that the NPP’s 88 MPs remain committed to fighting repression and unfair parliamentary practices.
The development adds to growing political tensions in Ghana’s legislature, with the opposition accusing the Speaker of bias and authoritarianism.
