Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has confirmed that Xabi Alonso’s future will be decided in the coming weeks, amid swirling reports linking the Spanish coach with a sensational return to Real Madrid.
Speaking at the Laureus Awards, Carro revealed that Leverkusen are actively planning for next season with Alonso at the helm, but admitted the door remains open for a possible exit. The 43-year-old manager, who steered Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title last season, has a contract until 2026 at the BayArena but also has a gentleman’s agreement allowing him to consider a move to one of his former clubs.
Alonso has long been admired by Madrid fans and executives alike, having had a decorated playing career with Los Blancos, as well as Liverpool and Bayern Munich. With Carlo Ancelotti’s future at the Bernabéu in doubt following Real Madrid’s Champions League exit to Arsenal, speculation has intensified that Alonso could be the next man to take charge of the Spanish giants.
“Of course, we are planning with Xabi Alonso. We want him to stay, but we also know how football works,” Carro said. “We’ve spoken with him, and we understand his ambitions. The coming weeks will bring more clarity.”
Ancelotti, despite being in the running for both La Liga and the Copa del Rey, is facing scrutiny, and reports suggest he could leave the club as early as the end of April. This uncertainty has only fueled the rumors of Alonso’s possible appointment at Madrid.
With a track record of rapid success and deep tactical insight, Alonso remains one of the most sought-after young managers in European football. Whether he stays to continue building at Leverkusen or returns to the Bernabéu, a decision is expected soon—one that could reshape the coaching landscape of both Bundesliga and La Liga.
