Real Madrid are on the brink of confirming their fourth signing of the summer transfer window, having reached an agreement with Benfica for promising left-back Álvaro Carreras. The Spanish international is expected to travel to Madrid soon to undergo a medical, finalize personal terms, and sign his new contract—potentially making the move official as early as this weekend.
Carreras had a €50 million release clause in his contract with the Portuguese side, but rather than triggering it in full, Real Madrid negotiated a deal to pay the amount across three instalments. The same payment structure was used in the recent signing of Dean Huijsen from AFC Bournemouth.
This transfer could prove to be a strategic masterstroke for Real Madrid, as Carreras is widely expected to become the club’s first-choice left-back next season and beyond. The position has been a consistent weak spot for the team, with Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia struggling to maintain top form over the past few years.
Carreras joins an exciting list of new faces at the Bernabéu this summer. Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold were brought in at the start of June and have already featured for Los Blancos at the Club World Cup. Meanwhile, Argentine wonderkid Franco Mastantuono has also signed but will officially join when he turns 18 in August.
With Xabi Alonso now at the helm, Real Madrid are reshaping their squad with an eye on long-term dominance—and Carreras could be the final piece of the puzzle at the back.
