An audit report by Deloitte has uncovered that the National Cathedral Secretariat spent more than $103,000—approximately GHS1.5 million—on rental accommodation for Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, a key figure in the cathedral project, over a two-year period.
The payments covered rent for a luxury property located at Glover’s House, 31 5th Link Road, Cantonments, and spanned January 2021 to December 2022. Although the original tenancy agreement pegged monthly rent at $4,500, the actual disbursements fluctuated over the period:
- $22,500 from Jan–May 2021
- $31,500 from June–Dec 2021
- $27,000 from Jan–June 2022
- $22,000 from July–Dec 2022
The Secretariat justified the expense by stating that Rev. Kusi Boateng, who lives in Kumasi, needed to be housed in Accra to effectively “watch over the cathedral” and supervise progress on the multi-million-dollar national project.
However, the revelation has sparked public outcry over financial mismanagement, with critics questioning why such a significant amount was allocated for personal accommodation while the project itself has faced delays and funding controversies.
The National Cathedral, envisioned as a monumental religious and national symbol, has been under scrutiny for its lack of transparency, ballooning costs, and the involvement of politically connected individuals.
