The Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana has raised serious concerns over a recent press conference held by the Minister for Government Communications, stating that the presentation offered a skewed and incomplete account of the current state of the project.
In a statement issued shortly after the press conference, the Board said it is reviewing the full content of the Minister’s remarks and would respond in due course. However, the Board provided what it described as “immediate comments” to address what it sees as misrepresentations in the government’s narrative.
According to the Board, the press conference failed to provide full disclosure, focusing only on the Management Letter and ignoring the actual audit reports for the years 2020 to 2023. “This is rather strange,” the statement read, emphasizing that the Minister had access to both the queries and the detailed responses provided by the Board — which together form the full context of the Management Letter.
Of deeper concern to the Board is the President’s directive to the Attorney General to begin processes to dissolve the Board — a move they find troubling, especially since investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) are still ongoing and no wrongdoing has been formally established.
The Board also expressed dismay at the sudden shift in government posture, especially since members had been in discussions with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on the future of the National Cathedral project. The decision to move forward with dissolution, they say, undermines the spirit of those consultations.
