Delegates of the New Patriotic Party have approved 54 constitutional motions at the party’s ongoing National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra. The conference, held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” marks a pivotal moment in the party’s efforts to reform and reposition itself after its loss in the 2024 general elections.
While the majority of the motions received overwhelming support, one proposal that sparked intense debate was a motion to impose a 35-year age limit for candidates seeking to contest for the National Youth Organizer position.
The motion was rejected by delegates, following passionate opposition from current National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, who described the proposal as damaging to the party’s youth leadership structure.
Mustapha, who is older than 35, emphasized that while the intention behind the amendment might be to encourage young leadership, it could unintentionally sideline capable individuals who still resonate with and represent the interests of the NPP’s youth.
Delegates agreed, opting to preserve the current 40-year that allows any party member—up to 40 years—to vie for the position, as long as they have a proven commitment to youth mobilization and party service.
