Global technology leader Google has officially launched its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Community Center in Accra, Ghana, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s digital transformation journey. Backed by a $37 million investment, the new facility aims to accelerate AI research and innovation across the continent.
The center will serve as a hub for local researchers, innovators, and startups, focusing on healthcare solutions, education technology, crop monitoring, and the adaptation of AI for African languages.
Speaking at the event, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson highlighted the importance of international collaboration in advancing responsible AI development.
“The United States is committed to working with industry to deliver secure, full-stack AI export packages – from hardware and software to applications and standards – to our friends and allies around the world,” he said.
Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology & Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, praised the initiative as a game-changer for the country’s emerging tech ecosystem, adding that it will create opportunities for young innovators and support Ghana’s ambition to become a leading AI and digital hub in Africa.
