Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George (MP), has issued a stern ultimatum to MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DSTV. The National Communications Authority (NCA) has been instructed to suspend DSTV’s broadcasting licence by Thursday, August 7, 2025, should the company fail to comply with demands to reduce subscription fees.
Minister George delivered the warning during the Government Accountability Series, confirming he has formally written to the NCA to initiate suspension proceedings unless DSTV revises its pricing. DSTV had recently justified its current price levels by citing a more-than-200% depreciation in the Ghanaian cedi over the past eight years, a rationale that George dismissed as insufficient.
Adding pressure, the minister previously demanded a 30% reduction in DSTV subscription rates, referencing improved cedi performance and widespread consumer dissatisfaction. MultiChoice was given until July 21, 2025 to propose a formal response.
“My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people. They have been cheated for years, and it is time we put an end to that,” George asserted, emphasizing that foreign broadcasters should not exploit citizens under the guise of macroeconomic pressures.
