An Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, has delivered judgment in favour of renowned Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson in her defamation case against TV show host Mona Gucci.
The court ruled that Mona Gucci’s statements made on Neat FM on May 26, 2020—labeling Yvonne Nelson as a “slay queen” who allegedly receives financial support for her lifestyle from unnamed benefactors—amounted to defamation. Justice Kocuvie-Tay rejected the defendant’s arguments of justification and fair comment.
In the judgment delivered on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the court ordered Mona Gucci to retract the defamatory statements and issue a formal apology on the same platform where the remarks were made. The court further directed her to pay Yvonne Nelson a total of GHC340,000, comprising GHC250,000 in general damages, GHC50,000 in exemplary damages, and GHC40,000 in costs.
The decision, which ends a legal battle that began in 2021, underscores the court’s stance against reputational harm in public discourse. Actress Yvonne Nelson was represented by Mrs. Victoria Barth, while Mona Gucci was defended by lawyer Samuel Osei Sarpong.
Copies of the full judgment will be made available to the parties on August 8, 2025.
