A social media post involving a mistaken GHS1,000 mobile money (MoMo) transfer has quickly escalated into a reputational crisis for Diana Yegbey, who is now publicly defending herself after being accused online of theft and dishonesty.
On Monday evening, Diana received a persistent call from an unknown number while she was asleep and unwell. The caller claimed to have mistakenly sent her mobile money and demanded a refund. Believing it could be a common MoMo scam, Diana initially advised the caller to contact MTN for a reversal and did not engage further due to her condition at the time.
Unbeknownst to her, the GHS1,000 received had already been automatically deducted by QuickLoan, an MTN lending service linked to her account. She says she tried to explain this to the sender and even offered to arrange a payment plan, but her efforts were met with aggression and no willingness to communicate. Eventually, she ended the call.
Despite later following up with a message and proof of the QuickLoan deduction, Diana was shocked to wake up to a Facebook post circulating widely, tagging her personally, her workplace, and professional affiliations — all accusing her of theft and mischaracterizing the entire exchange.
“I never thought I’d have to make a post like this,” she wrote in her own emotional response, “but I feel the need to speak up and set the record straight.” Diana clarified that she never withdrew the money, never refused to pay it back, and had acted in good faith under stressful circumstances. Her phone had also been off due to a power outage that night, which delayed her response.
“I did not ask to be involved in this situation. I did not request to receive any money,” she added. “Even after resolving the issue and apologizing, my words have been twisted to imply guilt.”
Diana called the online post “defamatory” and expressed deep concern over the threats and insults she’s received since her personal details were made public.
“I deserve a public retraction and a sincere apology,” she said, vowing not to stay silent as her hard-earned reputation is tarnished over a situation she did not initiate.
