The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed. Dr. Mohammed was among eight people who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, while serving the Republic of Ghana.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the decision was taken at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, in accordance with Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution.

The NPP explained that the choice to abstain was based on concerns over potential political polarization and tension that often accompany by-elections, particularly in the current national climate. The party stressed that it would be “inhumane and unconscionable” to subject the nation to a competitive political process so soon after the tragedy.

According to the statement, the greatest tribute the party could pay to the late MP and the other victims was to ensure a smooth and peaceful succession for the people of Tamale Central, while continuing efforts in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

The NPP concluded that when the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations in line with Article 112(5) of the Constitution, it will stand by its decision not to contest, acting in what it describes as the “national interest.”
