It is so interesting to realize that as the world becomes more modernized, insecurity tends to be on the rise.
The John Evans Atta Mills High Street and its environs are very busy during the day and even at night due to trading activities. One may think that encountering issues such as theft in such an area is rare because there are people always around. But here is an incident that occurred recently and I believe security agencies must pay attention to it:
A little over a month ago, l used the High Street around 9pm. There was this young lady right in front of our car who was driving a Toyota Corolla. Out of the blue, we saw a man dressed in tattered clothes walk straight to this lady’s car, opened the door, and started begging for alms. We could hear the lady screaming, obviously due to the fact that the man looked mentally unstable, dangerous and at the exact moment he opened the car, nobody could tell what he was up to. Luckily for our Corolla lady, the traffic light almost immediately changed to green and she drove past the man (without closing her door).
I and my friends started arguing about the matter. It was during our debate that a male colleague narrated his sad ordeal.
He told us about how a man looking just as tattered stole his iPhone 8 Plus by entering his car in traffic just as had happened to the young lady. Based on what he said and from checks I have personally made, some of these so called mad people on our streets are thieves just playing “smart”. Their MO is to come to your car and ask for money or do something to scare you. If you don’t stay vigilant, by the time they leave they would have bolted with something valuable to you. These criminals operate mostly in the evening and in traffic situations.
These sorts of tricks are on the ascendancy and even as we urge security agencies to up their game, it is up to you to protect your valuables by keeping your doors locked while you drive in traffic.
What happens is most people are tired from work and forget to even lock up as they drive home. Don’t let that be you. Stay vigilant and make sure to have on you pepper spray or something that can deter such people should they try to get violent with you.
Don’t forget that the number for emergency services is now 191 for all security and emergency situations you may find yourself in.
Stay safe.
