Politics almost ruined me ― Maame Dokono shares her biggest regret in showbiz

Grace Omaboe was for many years the biggest name in Ghana’s show business. She had a multi-faceted career spanning film, television, radio, and even music but it all came crashing down in 2009 when she was arrested and charged with three counts of operating an orphanage without a license and exposing a child to harm.

Her arrest conveniently came after the 2008 elections in which she supported the New Patriotic Party and Nana Akufo-Addo’s candidacy. Nana Akufo-Addo did not win the 2008 elections so it stands to reason that politics may have influenced the decision to come after her orphanage.

She pleaded not guilty at the time and proceeded to close down the orphanage after the incident died down.

She now runs the orphanage as Graceful Grace School at Adenta.

Discussing her biggest regret in life on the big screen on UTV’s United Showbiz, the legendary actress said it was that incident that almost broke her.

“They came to arrest me… the person who with her own money has built an orphanage and feeding kids who have been abandoned by their parents…  doing work that the state was supposed to be doing but because of politics they came to arrest me. I became very sad.”

“If I look back and think about that, it’s the saddest incident in my life.” an obviously flustered Grace Omaboe said.

Ms. Omaboe was Nana Ama McBrown’s guest together with show regulars A Plus, Arnold, and Bulldog and veteran movie producer, Mr. Hammond Mensah of HM Films fame.
