40 members of the Ghanaian parliament were spotted traveling by bus from the Tamale airport to Kpembi for the late Lepowura, M.N.D. Jawula’s funeral.
The lawmakers included Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the majority leader, Shiela Bartels, Mustapha Yussif, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and Habib Iddrisu, among others.
The 74-year-old former football executive passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, from an illness, and was buried according to Islamic customs.
In parallel with the committal service in Nashville, burial prayers were performed in his honor Friday night in the family home in Accra Newtown.
Prior to being transported abroad, he had been admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Center.
Between 1997 and 2001, the late sports enthusiast served as GFA Chairman.
The growth of cadet football in Ghana during MND Jawula’s leadership of the GFA contributed to the Starlets’ second- and third-place finishes at the World Cup competitions in Egypt in 1997 and New Zealand in 1999, respectively.
Additionally, Ghana’s Under-20 team (Black Satellites) won a trophy and finished second at the FIFA Under-20 World Youth competition under his direction.
He has held a number of prominent positions within the football community.
He also held the position of Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the Ghana 2008 Nations Cup (LOC).
Lepowura Jawula was the sole child of his mother Kpembiwura Jawula Ababio and was born in 1949. He attended the University of Cape Coast where he majored in English and Economics before earning a master’s degree in African literature and social policy from the University of Ghana, Legon.
