Speaking to Benjamin Akakpo, sit-in host of the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Wednesday, 26 September 2018, the assemblyman for the area, Oxford Este Kpodzo called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to come to their aid.
He explained that the perennial floods in the area are caused by rising water levels in the Volta River.
“When the river rises, it flows into the sea and the sea level rises also and this happens almost every quarter but this time, this is one of the heaviest that has happened. It started about three days ago when we saw that the sea was very rough around the Keta area here, to the extent that fishermen could not go to sea. As of yesterday, the sea had broken its banks to the streets. At about 11 pm, the whole Puveme community was submerged,” he stated.
Mr Kpodzo indicated that the water level was high that only fishermen are able to swim across it to safety.
Meanwhile, the Director of NADMO in the Keta municipality, Mr Godknows Blebu, said some of his officers are on the ground to rescue stranded residents and have been to some nearby villages to educate the locals on tidal waves.
He said several attempts to get the residents to safe grounds have proven futile although NADMO has created a safe haven for them.
About 30 houses and properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis have been destroyed.
There are, however, no reports of casualties.
