Women empowerment advocates seek to give women the ability and power over their own lives and make their own choices. Oheneyere Gifty Anti, the legendary Journalist is one of the foremost when it comes to women empowerment.
Through her prime-time show, The Standpoint, she has sought to provide protection for young ladies who are being forced into early marriage, fight for the homeless and even advocated for an end to Female Genital Mutilation. She also advocates for the protection of the rights and freedoms of all people (mostly women) in Ghana.
It seems the people of Manya Krobo have seen her immense contributions to society and has honored her with the title ‘Yokama’ which means Ideal Woman or Virtuous Woman.
Whiles she was being introduced to the people, Queen mothers, chiefs and other royals from the various towns and villages by HRM Nene Sakite ll, the people asked why she was selected even though she is not a native of Manya Krobo. Nana Sakite ll explained he has seen how she combines a tedious public advocacy work with family and that she was a role model to young girls across the country.
According to the chief, “Combining the two was a great deal” so he felt it was about time that traditional authorities in Ghana honor this virtuous woman.
She wept openly because not only did Nana Sakite ll see what she was doing but he also saw her struggles.
