Sports Journalist Saddick Adams in an epic take on how landlords in Accra are taking undue advantage of their unique position to extort money from young people in the name of rent also takes on those in positions of authority whose jobs it is to check some of these hawkish approaches by house owners.
According to Saddick, landlords prefer to raise their rent steeply in order to target foreigners instead of maintaining them at payable levels for Ghanaians.
The issue of rent has been a hot button issue for a very long time but current laws are in direct conflict with what pertains on the field. Many landlords price their rent in US Dollars in direct conflict with our laws and suffer no consequences. Many landlords increase rent at will and charge in excess of two years advance rent even though the law limits them to 6 months maximum.
It is about time those in authority rise up and check the housing sector and take measures to regulate the sector since landlords are not open to self-regulation.
