Coming off of this first trailer released last week for Terminator: Dark Fate, there’s been a lot of questions. The questions primarily regard Mackenzie Davis’ character, Sarah Connor’s role in this whole deal, whether or not we’d get a John Connor, and who was this new girl who was apparently such a big deal? But there was one other question that lingered in the back of our heads longer than the others, and it had to do with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character.
Of course, Schwarzenegger has come back time and again as the T-800 — though he played a different one every time. However, in the trailer, we saw Sarah Connor and co. visit an unsuspecting T-800 living in a cabin by himself. My initial impression was that this was one we were supposed to recognize…but who could it be, considering both T-800s in those first two movies died. Producer James Cameron, while discussing Terminator: Dark Fate‘s relationship to the other movies, gave a bit of added insight into Schwarzenegger’s character.
“I think the best way to think about Terminator: Dark Fate is to think about it as a direct sequel to Terminator 2, the third film in a series, if you will,” Cameron told Flicks and the City. “We’ll be continuing with Sarah’s story, John’s story, and the T-800 returns — a different T-800 with a very different role to play than what we’ve seen before.”
So no, in spite of how that trailer may have made things seem, this will indeed be a different T-800 from what we’ve seen before. This is quite comforting, as I couldn’t help but wondered if and how the friendly T-800 from T2 could have survived his lava bath.
What do you hope to see from the new T-800?
