In its bids to settle the growing tension and miscommunications around its E-Levy proposal, the government of Ghana is organizing its maiden town hall meeting in Koforidua on Thursday, 27th January 2022, at the Eastern Premier Hotel.
The event is to be chaired by the Finance minister, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta. Hon. Other relevant government officials and ministers will support Ofori Attah.
The event seeks to address critical issues raised by stakeholders in the E-Cash and banking industry, including the average Ghanaian citizen.
The proposed e-levy tax, according to the central government, comes on the back of the success of the mobile money system in the country over the past couple of years, and the revenue accrued among other relevant programs will be used to undertake the ‘YouStart’ Initiative, road construction and develop the digital space of Ghana.
The year 2021, according to the Central Bank, saw a significant leap in the Mobile Money business in Ghana as 47.3 million registered users with 18.4 active users and over GHs 80 billion (US$13 billion) value of mobile money transactions performed.
The government projects that over GHs 6.9 billion (US$1.1 billion) will be generated as revenue to support government business and widen the tax net when this policy is finally made operational.
