In a statement released on Tuesday, 24th January 2022, the special prosecutor’s office has assured the Ghanaian public of its commitment and readiness to thoroughly investigate and prosecute all involved in the Country’s banking and financial sector crises.
The crisis, which saw the collapse of several banks and financial institutions, had a heavy toll on customers and the economy.
The government embarked on a financial sector cleanup and recapitalization reforms with the nation’s scarce resources.
According to the statement, the investigations will target “alleged corruption and corruption-related offences perpetrated by officials of the Bank of Ghana, banks, specialized deposit-taking institutions and financial holding companies.”
“Any official found culpable and complicit would be arrested and prosecuted.”
The Special Prosecutor (OSP) also added that citizens with knowledge of the commission of corruption or corruption-related offences lodge complaints with the OSP against any official in this regard.
The collapse of these institutions left clients in distress, as many of the customers continued to struggle to retrieve their savings and investments and had workers of these banks laid off.
