The arrest of Shalimar Abbiusi, a Belgian national, has brought to light startling revelations involving alleged false declarations to obtain a student permit in Ghana. Ms. Abbiusi, initially recognized for her self-proclamation as the spokesperson for the “New Force” movement through a viral video, was apprehended and charged for purportedly obtaining a student permit through deceptive means.
The sequence of events leading to her arrest commenced with public attention drawn to the mysterious billboards featuring a masked image and the phrase “The New Force” across several locations in the country. Subsequently, Ms. Abbiusi’s prominence soared after her claim of being associated with the said movement.
However, the 30-year-old’s troubles began when she was invited for questioning by the Head of the National Enforcement Section at the Ghana Immigration Headquarters. Investigations into her immigration status uncovered discrepancies, with records indicating her initial arrival in Ghana in September 2017 as a frequent visitor until 2018, when she transitioned to becoming a resident.
Allegations arose concerning her purported enrollment at the Ghana Christian University College. Upon thorough checks, the College revealed no record of her enrollment, casting doubt on the authenticity of the documents used to secure her residential status.
Ms. Abbiusi has denied the charges leveled against her and has been granted bail by the Kaneshie District Court pending further investigations. However, she remains in the custody of the National Investigations Bureau, with her residence reportedly searched.
Meanwhile, the “New Force” has expressed grave concern over Ms. Abbiusi’s detention, alleging unlawful actions by security officials. A press release from the group highlighted her prolonged detention without charges, denial of legal representation, and unwarranted intrusion into her premises.
In response, the “New Force” condemned what they termed as rising persecution of their political affiliates and denounced the arrest as an abuse of power, emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic values.
The group urged vigilance among Ghanaians to safeguard the integrity of the nation’s democracy, with international attention drawn to the situation, calling for a fair resolution to the unfolding developments.
