In a surprising turn of events at the TotalEnergy AFCON 2023, supporters of the Black Stars, who expressed dissatisfaction and threatened to return home, were offered compensation of $400 each. These supporters, initially transported to the tournament by the government of Ghana to boost team morale, voiced their disappointment on Monday, January 15, citing a perceived lack of coordination and assistance from the organizing bodies.
A journalist closely associated with the supporters revealed to Citi Eyewitness News that officials engaged in negotiations after the disgruntled supporters threatened to expose them and return to Ghana. Following several meetings, the supporters were reportedly given $400 each as compensation.
In an interview with Citi Eyewitness News, the journalist stated, “Yesterday after the news broke, around midnight when most of us had gone to sleep, the officials came and called us all, then gave us what was due to us.” However, the journalist could not confirm whether all supporters received the compensation, and there is uncertainty about whether this amount covers the entire tournament.
