The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in Ghana has issued a public alert regarding the circulation of unregistered bottled mineral water known as SLIMFIT on the market. The FDA emphasizes that the only registered brand with a similar name is SLEMFIT (mineral water and purified water), produced by Twellium Industrial Company Limited.
According to the FDA, its surveillance teams are actively monitoring the markets to remove the unregistered SLIMFIT mineral water from trade. Additionally, efforts are underway to identify and take necessary action against the producers and distributors of the unauthorized product.
Consumers are strongly advised not to patronize unregistered products, as their safety and quality cannot be guaranteed. The FDA urges vigilance when purchasing packaged products and encourages the public to report any suspicious items to facilitate regulatory action.
The public alert comes in response to concerns raised by Samuel Nii Narku Dowuona, Founder/Managing Editor at Techgh24, who initially questioned the legitimacy of two similar-sounding products – SLEMFIT from Twellium Ghana and SLIMFIT MINERAL WATER promoted by Lesfam Company Limited on social media.
In his Facebook post, Dowuona sought clarification from the FDA on the approval status of both brands and highlighted the confusion among consumers, especially regarding the taste of one of the products. Lesfam Company Limited denied being the distributor of SLIMFIT, leading to further confusion in the market.
The FDA, in response to public queries, clarified that SLEMFIT MINERAL WATER and SLEMFIT PURIFIED WATER from Twellium Ghana are genuine and approved products. However, SLIMFIT Mineral Water is deemed fake, prompting the FDA to initiate an investigation to identify those responsible.
Lesfam Company Limited, after being alerted to the confusion, edited its promotion from SLIMFIT to SLEMFIT. The FDA is currently conducting investigations to determine the origin and status of SLIMFIT and will update the public accordingly.
