In a move towards reforming the criminal justice system, Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has presented a groundbreaking bill in Parliament. The proposed legislation seeks to amend the long-standing Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), introducing innovative measures to address non-violent offenses.
The focus of the proposed amendments is the incorporation of community service and the establishment of a Bond of Good Behaviour as viable alternatives to conventional custodial sentences and fines, particularly for minor offenses. This legislative initiative aligns with a broader global trend that emphasizes rehabilitation and community engagement over punitive measures.
The proposed amendments represent a significant step towards modernizing Ghana’s criminal justice system and fostering a more rehabilitative and community-oriented approach to addressing non-violent offenses.
