In the wake of the recent departure of Chris Hughton as the head coach of the Ghana national football team, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed a five-member committee tasked with finding a suitable replacement. The committee, led by GFA Vice President Mr. Mark Addo, is set to evaluate and recommend a candidate for approval by the executive council.
The decision to form the committee and initiate the search for a new head coach was made following the dissolution of the technical team on Tuesday, January 23, 2023. The GFA is keen on securing a coach who can lead the Black Stars to new heights and build on the team’s strengths.
Heading the committee is Mr. Mark Addo, the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge in football administration. Assisting him in this crucial task will be Legal Practitioner and Law Lecturer Ace Ankomah (Esq) as the Vice Chairman of the committee. Other committee members include Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Director of Coaching Education at the GFA, Opoku Nti, a football legend, and William Caesar Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The committee has been given a three-week ultimatum to recommend the next head coach to the executive committee for final approval. This tight timeframe reflects the urgency and seriousness with which the GFA is approaching the selection process.
While the detailed job description for the head coach position will be published soon, the GFA has outlined a concise set of criteria for the selection process.
First, the potential head coach should have a track record of success in coaching top men’s national teams or clubs.
The candidate must also possess a football philosophy that aligns or complements the Ghanaian football DNA, ensuring a seamless integration with the team.
Another prerequisite for the role is to hold the highest football license globally, coupled with a minimum of 15 years of coaching experience.
The successful candidate should have a proven track record in team reconstruction, reorganization, and the development of young talents, showcasing an ability to nurture and build a competitive squad.
And then last but not least, the new coach for the Black Stars job must exhibit proven disciplinary measures, tactical prowess, and strong leadership skills, creating a positive team culture and maximizing player potential.
