Ghana’s current struggles at senior level reflect long-standing failures in player development, according to sports analyst Hans Mensah Andoh.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (2 June), Andoh said the composition of the Black Stars squad reveals a breakdown in the transition from youth to senior football.

“It’s our failure to build a team from the junior ranks that has gotten us to this point,” he said.

He noted that few players in the current squad progressed through Ghana’s under-17 and under-20 systems, weakening continuity and experience at the top level.

“Go through the list and tell me how many players have played for Ghana at under-17 and under-20 levels,” he said.

The absence of this pipeline, he argued, has left the national team without players accustomed to international competition.

Andoh added that even where talent exists, the lack of early exposure at youth tournaments deprives players of the confidence and experience needed at senior level.

The result, he said, is a team that may struggle to cope with the intensity of World Cup football, particularly against seasoned opponents.

He suggested that rebuilding Ghana’s youth development structure will be key to restoring competitiveness in future tournaments.
