NPP’s Kwasi Kwarteng disputes JoyNews report on Afenyo-Markin meeting with MPs

New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team member Kwasi Kwarteng has disputed a JoyNews report that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin had been summoned by NPP MPs over allegations made by Sammy Gyamfi.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Kwarteng said the report did not accurately reflect the circumstances surrounding the meeting between Afenyo-Markin and members of the NPP parliamentary caucus.
According to him, the meeting was called by Afenyo-Markin himself and was not a meeting organised by MPs to summon their leader.
Mr Kwarteng said he had personally spoken to two MPs, including Gideon Boako, who confirmed that they were part of the meeting and had been invited by the Minority Leader.
He therefore challenged the characterization of the meeting as a “summoning” of Afenyo-Markin by the caucus.
However, host Emefa Akosua Adeti pushed back against Mr Kwarteng’s account, noting that JoyNews’ parliamentary reporter stood by the original report.
The disagreement comes amid controversy over comments by Sammy Gyamfi, which have triggered calls for clarification within the NPP parliamentary caucus.
JoyNews had reported that Afenyo-Markin was expected to face questions from some NPP MPs over the allegations, with pressure from some members reportedly leading to the caucus meeting.
Mr Kwarteng, however, maintained that the meeting should not be interpreted as a summons and insisted that Mr Afenyo-Markin initiated the engagement.
The competing accounts raise questions about whether the meeting was a routine caucus engagement convened by the Minority Leader, or whether concerns among some MPs over Mr Gyamfi’s allegations were a significant factor in bringing the caucus together.
Afenyo-Markin has also publicly rejected the characterization that he was summoned by his colleagues, insisting that he called the meeting himself.
