Former Ghana Football Association Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara believes Carlos Queiroz‘s time as Black Stars head coach is likely over, citing the financial burden of retaining the veteran Portuguese tactician.

Queiroz, 73, was appointed in April as the successor to Otto Addo ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and guided Ghana to the Round of 32, where the Black Stars suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to **Colombia national football team>.

Speculation over the experienced coach’s future intensified after he issued a statement thanking the Ghana Football Association, his players and the supporters following Ghana’s World Cup exit.

Although subsequent clarifications indicated that Queiroz has not resigned from his role, Sannie Daara believes the wording of the statement strongly suggests the coach is preparing to leave.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the CAF Senior Media Officer questioned whether the Ghana Football Association could continue to finance Queiroz’s reported salary and the cost of his technical team.

“I think he’s gone. His statement is clear. He’s saying goodbye. I think it’s clear. He was poached for the World Cup. Will we be able to pay him? His salary is 150,000 dollars. Will we be able to afford him? And he’s bringing a large backroom staff. Will we be able to pay him? I don’t think so,” Daara said.

Despite the growing speculation, the Ghana Football Association has not officially announced Queiroz’s departure.

While Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 32, the Black Stars made significant progress by reaching the knockout stage for the first time since the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Attention will now shift to preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as Ghana looks to build on the positives from its World Cup campaign.
