The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has questioned the credibility of Ghana’s reported inflation rate, arguing that the rising cost of food items does not reflect the official figure.

The Tano North Member of Parliament said the prices of essential commodities, particularly tomatoes, show that many Ghanaians are still experiencing significant cost-of-living pressures despite government’s claim that inflation has declined to about five per cent.

According to Dr Boako, the gap between official economic indicators and market realities raises concerns about the true state of the economy and the experiences of ordinary citizens.

He argued that current economic conditions reveal what he described as inconsistencies in the government’s account of the country’s economic performance.

Speaking during a discussion on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review on Peace FM, Dr Boako cited the price of tomatoes in Accra as an example of the pressure facing consumers.

“A piece of tomato sells at GH¢10 in most outlets in Accra, yet we are told inflation is around five per cent. What you make of that is as good as what I am thinking. The settings are exposing a lot about the government,” he said.

Dr Boako’s comments come after the government highlighted a decline in inflation as one of the indicators of economic recovery during the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.
