The second weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season delivered another round of surprises on Saturday, with defending champions Liverpool dropping points at Anfield, Newcastle United piling more misery on Tottenham Hotspur and newly promoted Hull City continuing their remarkable start.
Liverpool 2-2 Nottingham Forest
Liverpool’s difficult start under new manager Andoni Iraola continued as they had to come from behind twice to rescue a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
Dan Ndoye stunned the home crowd by putting Forest ahead in the 24th minute before Alexander Isak equalised for Liverpool on the hour mark.
Forest regained the advantage when Morgan Gibbs-White converted a 70th-minute penalty after goalkeeper Alisson was adjudged to have fouled Neco Williams.
Liverpool responded again, however, with new signing Victor Muñoz producing an impressive 82nd-minute equaliser on his first start for the club.
The result means Liverpool have drawn their opening two league matches after beginning their title defence with a 2-2 draw at Newcastle last weekend.
Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle
Things are already becoming uncomfortable in North London.
Tottenham suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat as Newcastle left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a convincing 2-0 victory.
After a goalless first half, Anthony Elanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute before Yoane Wissa doubled Newcastle's advantage ten minutes later.
It leaves Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs without a point — or even a goal — after two matches.
Tottenham began the campaign with a damaging 3-0 defeat at Brentford and have now conceded five unanswered goals in their opening two league fixtures.
Coventry 0-1 Hull City
One of the early stories of the season is developing at Hull City.
Liam Millar's 82nd-minute winner earned Hull a 1-0 victory over fellow promoted side Coventry City, maintaining their perfect Premier League start.
Hull had already produced one of the shocks of the opening weekend by beating Manchester United 2-0.
Their six-point haul has temporarily taken them level on points with Manchester City at the top end of the table.
Bournemouth 1-1 Everton
Everton left it extremely late to steal a point on the south coast.
Alex Scott put Bournemouth ahead in the 41st minute and the Cherries appeared destined for victory until James Tarkowski struck in stoppage time to make it 1-1.
The dramatic equaliser preserved Everton's unbeaten start following their opening-weekend 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
Man City had already sent a warning
Manchester City opened Matchweek Two on Friday night with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Erling Haaland scored twice, while Rayan Cherki also grabbed a brace as City followed their opening 2-1 victory against Bournemouth with another win.
Enzo Maresca's side therefore have maximum points from their opening two matches.
There is still plenty to come before Matchweek Two is completed. Chelsea host Brighton, Leeds face Brentford and Sunderland welcome Fulham on Sunday before Manchester United host Ipswich Town. Arsenal then travel to Aston Villa on Monday night.
