UPDATE: Ghana Water Completes Repairs on Damaged Kaneshie Pipeline, Supply Being Restored
Ghana Water Limited says repair works on the damaged 500mm transmission pipeline along the Kaneshie-Hansonic corridor have been completed.

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has completed emergency repairs on the major transmission pipeline damaged during ongoing construction works between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.
The development comes a day after water supply was disrupted to several communities following damage to the 500mm-diameter pipeline during excavation for underground storm drains along the corridor.
Ghana Water announced on Saturday, August 29, 2026, that its technical team had successfully completed the repair works and begun the process of restoring water supply to affected customers.
Communities affected by the disruption included Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township and Chorkor, as well as surrounding areas.
Supply restoration to be gradual
Although repairs have been completed, residents should not necessarily expect normal water pressure to return immediately across all affected communities.
Ghana Water explained that the restoration process will be gradual as the distribution system stabilises following the interruption.
Some customers, particularly those in areas farther from major transmission lines or at higher elevations, may initially experience low pressure or intermittent supply as water moves through the network.
Normal service is expected to improve progressively as pressure builds across the system.
The development brings relief to thousands of households and businesses that had been without regular water supply following Friday's incident.
What caused the disruption?
As DailyAccra previously reported, the pipeline was damaged during excavation works being undertaken by AWERCO Construction Limited as part of major drainage works between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.
The damage caused significant quantities of water to pour into the construction trench, initially making it difficult for Ghana Water engineers to access the affected section.
Technical teams had to dewater the excavation before repairs could be carried out on the transmission main.
Ghana Water subsequently deployed engineers and other technical personnel to the site to undertake emergency repairs.
Attention returns to major construction works
With the pipeline repaired, attention will now return to the wider road and drainage works taking place along the Darkuman-Hansonic Junction and Kaneshie First Light corridor.
The construction of an underground storm drain at Hansonic Junction forms part of interventions intended to address longstanding flooding and drainage problems along the Dr Busia Highway.
The incident, however, highlights the challenges involved in carrying out major excavation works along a corridor containing critical utility infrastructure.
Additional drainage construction is also expected around Kaneshie in September.
Under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, construction of a new underground stormwater drainage system between Pamprom Junction and First Light Junction is expected to begin from September 7.
The approximately 1.5-kilometre project will require temporary road closures and traffic diversions along portions of the Dr Busia Highway.
For residents of the communities affected by Friday's pipeline damage, however, the immediate situation has improved.
With repairs now completed, Ghana Water says supply is being progressively restored, although customers may experience low pressure or intermittent flow while the network returns to normal operation.
