Asante Kotoko have been crowned champions of the 2026 Democracy Cup after defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Friday, August 28.
The latest instalment of Ghana football’s biggest rivalry failed to produce a goal during regulation time, but Kotoko goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim emerged as the decisive figure when the contest went to penalties.
Danlad saved two Hearts of Oak spot-kicks as Kotoko converted all four of their attempts to seal an emphatic 4-1 shootout victory and reclaim the trophy from their rivals.
Kotoko start on the front foot
The Porcupine Warriors began the encounter aggressively and immediately put Hearts under pressure, winning three corner kicks inside the opening two minutes.
Kotoko enjoyed much of the early possession and appeared to have found the breakthrough in the 17th minute when new signing Emmanuel Marmah put the ball into the net.
The celebrations were short-lived, however, as the assistant referee raised his flag for offside and the goal was disallowed.
Hearts gradually settled into the encounter and began putting together promising passing moves, although Kotoko continued to enjoy more possession and created some of the clearer opportunities.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both Ghanaian giants searching for the decisive goal but finding the two goalkeepers difficult to beat.
Danlad produced important saves when Hearts threatened, while Benjamin Asare was equally impressive in the Hearts goal, repeatedly frustrating Kotoko's attack.
With neither side able to break the deadlock after 90 minutes, the Super Clash headed straight to penalties.
Danlad takes centre stage
It was in the shootout that Danlad produced the performance that ultimately decided the trophy.
The Kotoko goalkeeper denied Kelvin Osei Asibey and Amankwah Baafi, while Mohammed Ali converted Hearts' only successful penalty.
Kotoko, meanwhile, were perfect from 12 yards, converting each of their four attempts to wrap up a comprehensive 4-1 shootout victory.
The saves sparked celebrations among Kotoko supporters at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as the Porcupine Warriors secured another victory over their fiercest rivals.
Kotoko reclaim Democracy Cup
The triumph gives Asante Kotoko their second Democracy Cup title in three editions.
Kotoko won the inaugural edition in 2024 after beating Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium before the Phobians claimed the trophy in 2025.
Friday's victory therefore puts Kotoko back on top of the competition's honours list with two titles.
The result also hands new Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler his first trophy in Ghanaian football, providing an early boost ahead of the new domestic campaign.
More than bragging rights
The third edition of the Democracy Cup was organised by the Parliament of Ghana to commemorate 32 years of parliamentary democracy in the country.
The Ghana Football Association sanctioned the fixture, which was staged in Kumasi for the first time.
Beyond the trophy and bragging rights, Kotoko's victory could also open the door to an international appearance.
A proposal submitted to Parliament ahead of the match would see the 2026 Democracy Cup winner invited to Antelope Valley, California, in May 2027 for an exhibition match as part of the BABA Festival. The proposed arrangement was still awaiting finalisation ahead of Friday's game.
For now, however, Kotoko will savour another memorable victory over their traditional rivals.
After 90 minutes in which neither Ghanaian giant could find a way through, it was Danlad Ibrahim who ultimately decided the latest Super Clash, producing two crucial penalty saves to send the Democracy Cup back to Kumasi.
